Frank August Case Study: 01 Mizunara Japanese Oak Bourbon – A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation
Frank August's Case Study: 01 Mizunara Japanese Oak Bourbon is a limited-release expression that highlights the brand's commitment to exploring unique finishing techniques in bourbon production. This inaugural release features a carefully selected blend of five Kentucky straight bourbon barrels, each finished in medium-toasted Mizunara Japanese oak casks.
Production Highlights:
- Selection and Finishing: Five barrels of Kentucky straight bourbon were chosen and finished in Mizunara oak casks. Due to Mizunara’s porous nature, the whiskey was closely monitored every 30 days to achieve the ideal flavor profile.
- Proofing: Bottled at 114.4 proof (57.2% ABV) to highlight the distinct characteristics imparted by the Mizunara oak.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Rich amber with discernible legs that coat the glass.
- Nose: Opens with inviting aromas of butterscotch, followed by mild rye spices.
- Palate: A warm, smooth entry of butterscotch transitions to mid-palate notes of apple and mild spices. As it coats the mouth, hints of mint and pepper emerge, with butterscotch and caramel returning on the back end.
- Finish: Pronounced and evolving, with persistent butterscotch notes, balanced by the warming effect of the high proof, and highlighted by soft baking spice nuances.
This expression blends traditional bourbon elements with the exotic influence of Mizunara oak, offering a complex and evolving tasting experience.
