This is everything that made the original Very Olde St. Nick SuperFreak special—turned up several notches.
SuperFreak is built from a three-barrel batch consisting of two 11-year barrels and one 18-year barrel, but this particular batch drinks like something considerably older. The influence of that 18-year whiskey seems to come through beautifully, adding maturity, deeper oak and an impressive level of complexity.
The first thing that stands out is the mouthfeel. It's richer and more developed, with bold oak that provides structure without overwhelming the whiskey. This is the kind of bourbon you can nose for an hour and continue discovering something new—and then spend even longer working through the glass.
Nose: Sweet cinnamon, dried berries, cloves and honey.
Palate: Blackberry, tobacco, sweet mature oak, graham cracker and spicy cinnamon. Rich, layered and exceptionally textured.
Finish: Green tea and lingering oak that seems to go on for days.
At 112.6 proof, there's plenty of intensity, but the age and maturity keep everything remarkably composed. Give this one some time in the glass—and don't be afraid to give the bottle some air after opening. The original SuperFreak developed dramatically after being open for a couple of weeks, and we expect this monster to continue opening up as well.
